GGS 006 Introduction to Gaming

In this podcast, Susan and Amelia discuss the Golden Globe awards and gaming with Guest Geek Kelly. This area is one in which our Geek Girls need help as they have not played many recent games. Our guest Kelly brings us out of the Dark Ages, and brings us more or less current with some of her favorite games, Final Fantasy X and Skyrim.

For the listeners of the Geek Girl Soup Podcast, Audible is offering a  free 14-day trial to give you the opportunity to check out their service. We have two recommendations this time, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Ready Player One. If you have seen the Swedish film, the US film, or both, you'll want to listen to the audiobook for the full story. Ready Player One, narrated by Wil Wheaton, takes place in 2044 and is filled with 80's nostalgia causing squee after squee for those of us who lived it.

  1. It was a pleasure to hear Kelly's entertaining and informed take on RPG's. I've got a female Shepard character in the Mass Effect series. She's a bad-ass blonde who takes no crap.

One correction I'd offer: The Elder Scrolls games are more like the original computer RPGs like Wizardry. You create a role to play in the game. The Final Fantasy games are Japanese RPGs where you play a defined character and level them up.

Heavy Rain gave me an emotional reaction stronger than any game I've ever played. I lost one of my characters in my play thru. I could have gone back to save her, but the impact of the moment made me quit the game for a week. When I came back to the game, I chose to leave her fate as it was. Awesome experience!

Avoid American Magee's Alice: Madness Returns Amelia. Very repetitive and not so fun.
